IGNORANCE IS BLISS
Introduction
In this essay I take the title Ignorance is Bliss because in the poetry which I chose is Truth, in my interpretation after I read this poetry is mostly talk about the indecision between to know the truth or to live in ignorance. Ignorance means
I’m using the coherence truth which says that coherence theories in general, truth requires a proper fit of elements within a whole system. Very often, though, coherence is taken to imply something more than simple logical consistency; often there is a demand that the propositions in a coherent system lend mutual inferential support to each other. So, for example, the completeness and comprehensiveness of the underlying set of concepts is a critical factor in judging the validity and usefulness of a coherent system
In this paper I will explain my interpretation about the poem, about the relation between the poem and the reality and about the reasons why some people chose to live in ignorance than to know the truth.
Body
Truth
And if the sun comes
How shall we greet him?
Shall we not dread him’
Shall we not fear him
After so lengthy a session with the shade?
Sun is a metaphore for the truth like this poem tittle, him refers to the sun and shade here is a metaphore for the ignorance. When people are in the safety zone or in the comfort zone usually they don’t want to leave that zone. People also usually like the ordinary life, it is very hard to be changed or to leave the habit. The confuse we can see from shall we not dread him shall we not fear him, they are afraid if the truth isn’t good, how if it is bad because they’ve been in the comfort zone in a very long time. The truth will make so many changes in their life and some people don’t want to change their life because they have felt very comfort in their life.
Though we have wept for him,
Though we have prayed
All through the night years
What if we wake one shimmering morning
To hear the the fierce hammering
Of his firm knuckles
Hard on the door?
People want to know truth so much and they have tried to know the truth, they have search for it for a very long time but they feel afraid of the truth itself which they have been waiting for, they are afraid if the truth will hurt them, if the truth will make them leave their peaceful world, their comfort zone. They will feel afraid of leaving their habit, their ordinary life which may be changed forever and they cannot go back again.
Shall we not shudder?
Shall we not flee into the shelter,
the dear thick shelter
of the familiar propitious haze?
People will be in between two choices, should they face the truth or hide in the ignorance where they can be feel safe, where they can feel comfort and they don’t feel under the pressure and threat.
Sweet is it, sweet is it
To sleep in the coolness
Of snug unawareness
In this poetry people choose to live in the bliss of ignorance. It is more comfort when we life in ignorance but we feel peaceful than we know the truth but it hurts us.
The dark hangs heavily
Over the eyes
People usually want to know the truth in their hati nurani. They try to find out the truth but in the same moment they also feel afraid of what what they will feel, they are afraid of what will happen after they knew the truth. They want to know the truth but they too worry to be hurted.
From yahoo answer I see some problems that make someone chose to be an ignorant. I see a wife’s problem, she shared to people about knowing the truth or being ignorant, she heard from her husband about the thing she was better off she didn’t know. Because of that case, she cannot feel the same again to her husband and she thought that she was better of being ignorant. The second story is about a girl who lives with her father, her mother lives separately from them because they had divorce. She was proud of his mother and her father before she realized that she was born when her mother was 15 years old. She realized that actually she was undesirable. After she knew the truth, her feeling to his father and mother had changed. She was happier when she didn’t know the truth than when she knew the truth. The truth will lead us to the changes, although we want or not. Some people chose to pretend that they know nothing although they have known something because they think that life will be easier and better than the truth is known. Truth here is a very simple thing. It is something which somebody had done and it of course related to the whole system.
Conclusion
From the explanation above about the “Truth” poem by Gwendolyn Brooks, the truth here is a coherence truth which have a relation to the whole life. I interpret that some people choose to live in ignorance than know the truth because of their life experiences. Actually they want to know the truth but after they knew the truth, they lost their past life. They feel more comfortable in their past life but they cannot go back there because they cannot feel the same feeling anymore and everything has changed. For them, ignorance is bliss. They prefer to know nothing or being an ignorant ones but they feel comfort and happy with their life than to know everything but it made life worse than before because they have lost something important in their life. They do not like the change which had happened after they knew the truth. “If the time can be turned back, I prefer to know nothing” somebody said or ”Ignorance is Bliss”.

Revolusi Diri

(kuharap)selamanya
Telah kuputuskan
Untuk perlahan-lahan menanggalkan
Apa yang telah terukir sebelumnya
Melupakan dan mengganti

Sorry
I'm sorry, so sorry
because today, actually I have to be in Sragen with you all my workcamp friends (Mas Dito, Mba Dhanny,Mira-onni, Ji Won-onni, Jin Woo-oppa, Min Jeung, Mi Seon-onni, and Violaine)
unfortunately I came to the train station after the train, so I was late. I was so sad because I couldn't go back to my boarding house so I walked alone from the station to my Uncle's office, maybe 1 or 2 kms T.T so sad..
Tomorrow, I will go back to Sragen..
